Gold Plating

Gold plating varies in price and durability as well as appearance.  Pure gold is rated at 24K and is beautiful to look at but it is not durable at all and is expensive.  Gold platters have turned to the idea of adding metals to gold to provide hardness or durability to the final mix. In many cases 14K gold is better than 18K gold because of durability.  Manufacturers of pen components generally offer 24K, 10K or cobalt gold, and Titanium gold.

24K gold plating is least expensive because the plating is extremely thin.  This makes most 24K products prone to premature wear.

10K gold or cobalt gold plating is generally more expensive than 24K gold.  Nickel or cobalt is added to the gold to increase durability.  Also the plating on components is heaver to provide the beauty.  The gold color is lighter in appearance but hardly noticeable to the untrained eye.

Titanium Plating

Gold titanium plating offers the look of 24k Gold with the durability of titanium.  Gold titanium cost two or three times what 24K gold or 10K gold platted components but the durability far outweighs the cost difference.

Black titanium is another option for plating that provides added beauty.  Selecting black titanium with the appropriate wood produce a beauty that is truly appreciated.

Rhodium Plating

Rhodium is a precious metal of the Platinum group with properties of wear and corrosion resistance that make it ideally suitable as a final finish.

Rhodium is a white bright metal as plated and has many advantages over other white metal finishes in that it is very hard.  This makes the pen finish extremely durable and almost impervious to attack by most naturally occurring chemical compounds such as acids from the hand.  Therefore, this finish is the toughest available.
